portajump emergency starter
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q. When do you remove PJ from the 12-volt power port?
A. The unit should be removed from the port after recharging, or when the car is turned off.

Q. Can you drive your car while you are recharging your Porta-Jump?
A. Yes. It is recommended that you drive your vehicle while charging PJ so the energy moves quicker.

Q. What kind of temperature can the PJ withstand?
A. The effective operating temperature is -4 F (-20 C) to +130 F (54 C).

Q. What happens to my PJ if the temperature goes below -4 F below? I live in Minnesota and we can hit -15 and even -20 below
occasionally. Is the Porta-Jump still usable when the weather gets warmer?
A. The recommended temperature range is stated on the package; however, there is a tolerance of about 5 to 8 degrees on the high and
low side. Additionally, the chemical reaction inside the alkaline battery may or may not be adversely affected by the freezing temperature
and may be usable after the temperature gets warmer. There is more damage from the extreme heat than from the cold.

Q. When reading your vehicle battery, does the adaptor cord need to be in the port before or after I put my vehicle in the accessory
position?
A. We recommend not plugging the adaptor cord into the port until after the car is in the accessory position. This will limit any errors in
the readings.

Q. Can you leave the car idling instead of driving while recharging?
If so, will it take longer to recharge?
A. Yes. The unit will recharge in the idling position. However, the recommended time frame for re-charging is based on the vehicle being
driven. If PJ is left to recharge from the idling position, the time may vary.

Q. When re-charging the PJ, does the LED light turn off once the unit is at full capacity?
A. No. The LED light will continue to stay on while the unit is plugged in. It will not overcharge the unit, however, we recommend
disconnecting after 30 minutes (of recharging).

Q. Does the car need to remain in the accessory position the whole time I am recharging my battery?
A. Yes.

Q. How do I know if my car is accepting a charge?
A. Keep an eye on the details of the car. You should notice the dashboard lights getting brighter.

Q. Can I run my car off the PJ only?
A. No.  PJ was designed to be an energy booster for your car battery.

Q. How can I test my PJ for power level?
A. Plug in the adaptor cord to the PJ only. If the LED light shines a bright green, then you know that the unit has power. You can also
attach a voltmeter to the PJ receptacle jack.  A fully charged unit will read 30 volts.

Q. Why does the PJ get hot?
A. If the unit is in the "charging" position for longer then 10 minutes, it will become warm. Once the car battery has accepted enough
voltage to get the energy level high enough to start, the car battery will not accept any more.  On the other hand, it could be a problem
with the connection at the port that is not allowing power to pass through.  Either way it will send it back to PJ causing it to get hot.

Q. If my car battery is completely dead, or at a low level, will the PJ work?
A. No. It is not designed to replace or jump-start a completely dead battery. It only carries 30 volts and if your battery is at too low to
accept a charge, the LED light will not turn green.

Q. What if I do not get any response when I am reading my car battery with the adaptor cord?
A. There could be a problem with the connection at the port not allowing the adaptor to read the battery, your battery has a bad cell or
your power port (cigarette lighter) 10 Amp fuse is burned out.

Q. Can I overcharge my PJ?
A. No. PJ automatically shuts off once it has a full charge of 30 volts. However, it is not recommended to leave a unit charging longer
than the recommended time.

Q. Can I use PJ on a motorcycle?
A. Yes, if the vehicle has a power port or cigarette lighter port.

Q. Will this unit work if I have a vehicle that has automatic headlights?
A. Yes. The lights do not come on until the vehicle has completely started.  Therefore, you can still go through the process with your
vehicle in the accessory position and your lights will not be a factor.

Q. Does the PJ have to be re-charged right after it has been used?
A. No, but it is recommended that you recharge it right after use so it is ready for future use. A unit can be recharged at any time,
however, it may take longer to recharge.

Q. Will PJ work on a Prius?
A.  Yes.  Please consult your manual for which position you need to have it in.

Q: Will PJ work with a VW diesel?
A: Yes the PJ can start a diesel.  The only time that it will not is when the vehicle is equipped with the Benz Hot Coil Starter.  Those
systems are on most older MBs prior to 2000.
Since a diesel takes a little more bust I would recommend 5 - 7 more minutes of charging time.

Q: What is the silver disc in the plastic with a ring attached? There is no reference in the manual or your website. What do you do with it?
A: We have included a brilliant LED with the Universal model so that if you need extra light for the fail safe mode, you can see at night
under the hood. To use: 1st remove the clear plastic tab from the side. Then either pinch or slide the lever on top to light it.

Q: My car doesn't have a cigarette lighter.  Can I still use Porta-Jump?
A: Yes.  Plug the adaptor into the 12v power port to recharge your battery or you can use the Universal model that comes with mini
jumper cables.

Q: How can I test the voltage in my PJ?
A: To test PJ with a volt meter,
plug the adaptor into the PJ and touch the red meter prong to the gold ball at the end of the adapter and the black meter prong to the
silver spring on the side. You should read around 30v. (See image below)
